(a) Briefly explain how gneiss, exposed at the Earth’s surface, containing crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica could provide some of the chemical and mineral ingredients for

(i) sandstone

(ii) mudstone

(iii) evaporite deposit

(iv) limestone.

(Around 250 words in total for part (a))

 

(b) Sedimentary rocks can be classified into three groups – evaporites, limestones, and those formed from fragments of pre-existing rocks. Write a paragraph for each of these three types of sedimentary rock that outlines the make-up of the rock type and the sort of environmental conditions required to deposit them. (50 to 100 words for each of the three rock types)
