Life cycle resources and rituals are central to the shaping of a child in Guyana, South America. I spent six years of my life over there, before I returned back to Canada. In March of 2008, my family and I went back for a visit. From my experience, the country has changed drastically. Fortunately, the transformation has been positive for the people, the economy, politically, and socially. The culture, environment, schools, businesses, the products, climate etc., has all altered from then to now, the 21st century.

Guyana was revealed by the Europeans in 1948. Guyana the word means “the land of many waters”. The beautiful yet struggling country is on the northern shoulder of South America, bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Suriname, on the northwest by Venezuela, and on the south and southwest by Brazil. The capital is George Town and prevalence of people inhabit here. Guyanese culture is based on the influence of many diverse races and countries, such as Caribbean, Dutch, Indian, African, Amerindian, Portuguese and British. Guyana has a population of around three-quarters of a million people. The three main religions practiced in Guyana are Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. The main language spoken is English. Guyana has a tropical climate, with slight seasonal temperature change. The annual rainfall (about 1525 to 2030 mm/about 60 to 80 in) on the coast occurs mainly from April to August and November to January.
Guyana over the years has gone through many changes economically, politically and socially. Emerging from colonization from the British in May 26 1966, Guyana has had its share of political instability. The country's two main political parties are the PPP/C and the PNC/R, have been involved in the struggle for Guyana independence. Since Guyana’s independence, there has been rise and fall in the political stability ranging from riots, rigged election etc. Over the years, Guyana is becoming more and more stable politically, with fair and free election and less and less of rioting and criminal activities
Economically, Guyana from the past as being a sugar production country has been expanding in the rice industry, citrus and lots of other ground provisions. The government has also been expanding in bauxite, gold and hydro electricity. A lot of investors have been going into Guyana, also over the years expanding the commercial market. Guyana also has been working together with other countries in preservation of its rain forest one of the only still existing one that is untouched. Climate change is good commerce for a country such as Guyana, but ultimately the developed world must provide the financial support expected of it, President Bharrat Jagdeo reiterated last night. “Climate Change is good business for us,” Jagdeo said, while adding that “It is probably the best thing that could have happened to forested countries”.  He said that before the impact of deforestation was properly analyzed, developed countries thought they could get away with giving the forested countries philanthropic tokens, which included giving small grants.

Socially, Guyana is faster becoming tech savvy. From the days of no telephone, to the days of cell phones in almost every home. Guyana also is moving up in the context of internet also with the implementation of a fiber optic cable by the country telephone and internet provider which has enabled internet connection by four times the normal speed.

Over time, many positive changes have come out of the country. In my neighborhood, all storefronts are up. New owners are operating to suit and satisfy the residents. There are doctors, lawyers, real estate developers, real estate brokers, mortgage companies, insurance brokers, travel agencies, teachers, and others professionals, restaurants, repair shops and retail businesses of every kind. They are creating employment for their fellow country people. Real estate transactions and construction are always on the rise in this part; pride of home ownership is top. In this way, the exponential spin off in other businesses, such as hardware and lumbering, insurance and home mortgage, etc., has increased many folds.
Education has also proven to change for the enhanced. The education system is found to be one of the strongest for the Caribbean’s. A lot of women are now trying to achieve something, other than being a home maker. There are now more female teachers, police officers, lawyers, business owners, doctors, nurses etc. However, with the male, you are still able to find illiterate ones. The men in Guyana, especially in small towns like Leguan, Success, Maryville etc., would rather work in the rice field and factories.
Religion in most cases has been involuntarily transformed into “religiosity” – a practice forceful in ceremonies and rituals, but poor in practical morals and values. Hence, it is not uncommon to see rum shops and bars being blessed by pundits (hindu priest), young girls and children dressed and dancing vulgarly on Night Club stages with the full endorsement of parents and the religious community (even though there might be some violation of child labor laws).

In conclusion, for Guyana to move ahead and prosper for all its peoples, its leaders will have to accept that change is foreseeable. They must be prepared to review the ‘Guyanese’ belief of racial politics and implement changes for the benefit of the entire nation. The present political views in Guyana have too many people under its spell, and it is beckoning for change. Each leader in present Guyana has an unwritten obligation to represent the entire nation and change the code of belief of racial politics. The country has seen tremendous change and improvement, but only with the peoples full support will it continue to rise.
